Inside Out Drill

Set Up

Using cones, create a 8×8 box in front of the goal. Put all your defensive personnel in 1 color and your offensive personnel in a different color. To start put defensive players and 2 offensive players around the box area, at each corner. The remaining 3 players of each color, will be inside the box area, so you will be in a 5v5 situation. The drill starts with the players passing around the perimeter. If a defensive player on the perimeter receives the ball, and offensive player will slide out to cover the ball and then recover back to the crease area after they pass. If an offensive player gets a pass on the outside, a defender would approach the ball and then recover. When coach blows double whistle, all the defensive players will move to inside the box and 4 offensive players will move to the perimeter. Now there are 4 offensive players on the perimeter, and 1 on the crease. When coach blows a triple whistle, we want to make 2 passes, and then dodge to the goal. We want the defense to slide/double team the dodger, and stay in the live play until a goal is scored or a turnover/dead ball occurs.

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Recognition – we are putting players in scattered spots to start, so that when the actual play begins, they must get into position
  • Communication – defense must communicate “Ball” “1 slide”  “2 slide” etc…
  • Offense we want to move the ball quick enough to get a scoring opportunity

Progressions

  • Put players in sets your opponent play
  • go 6v6 – 4 outside, 4v4 inside
