Pop Passing is a continuous offensive drill for intermediate through advanced players that teaches crease players to react to the dodger, pop into space behind the dodge, and quickly move the ball to the backside.

SET UP

Set up two crease players inside and two dodging lines up top. The ball carrier dodges the alley as the inside player times their pop into the space behind the dodge. The dodger rolls away from pressure and hits the pop player, who catches with their outside hand and swings the ball across. Players follow their pass, replace positions, and repeat continuously on both sides.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • React to the Dodger: Don’t predetermine the pop—wait to see where the dodger attacks, then move in relation to them.
  • Time the Pop: Release as the dodge develops so you arrive in the open space behind the ball carrier at the right time.
  • Catch Outside & Move It: Receive the pass on your outside shoulder and quickly swing the ball to the backside to keep the defense moving.
