3v2 Diamond is an advantage-based offensive game that teaches spacing, maintaining passing lanes, and manipulating defenders to create skip passes and backdoor opportunities.

SET UP

Set up the offense in a diamond formation and play a live 3v2 within the designated area, creating natural 2v1 advantages around the perimeter. The primary constraint is that the offense cannot make the adjacent pass between neighboring perimeter players; instead, players must look to move the ball through, throw bottom-up, or use skip passes across the defense. Offensive players can move through and exchange positions, with teammates switching when necessary to maintain spacing. As the ball moves, players should stay “loaded” and ready to catch and shoot, while players two passes away look for opportunities to backdoor toward the pipes. Use ball fakes and pumps to move defenders and open skip lanes before attacking the advantage.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Maintain the Passing Lane: Preserve spacing around the perimeter so the ball carrier consistently has clear passing options and the offense can maintain its 2v1 advantages.
  • Manipulate & Skip: Use pumps, hitches, and ball fakes to move defenders before finding the skip lane across the defense.
  • Be Dangerous Off-Ball: When two passes away, look to backdoor toward the pipes; when the defense collapses, stay loaded and ready to step into the catch-and-shoot opportunity.
