Lil Irish is a defensive communication drill for intermediate through advanced players that develops approaches, slides, recoveries, and off-ball positioning through constant defensive movement and repetition.

SET UP

Set up three offensive players and three defenders in a small area of the field, with the drill able to run both above and below GLE. Start with the ball at one offensive player, who uses a slow carry or half-dodge to initiate the action. The on-ball defender approaches while the designated help defender fires out with a slide. As the ball moves to the next offensive player, the defense must recover, communicate, and establish the next on-ball defender and help positions. Continue moving the ball around the group so every defender rotates through the different responsibilities. The drill can be adjusted to match your defensive system, including crease slides or adjacent/coma slides, and should be run at a controlled pace so players can focus on executing each approach, slide, and recovery correctly.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Communicate Every Rotation: The drill should be loud. Defenders must constantly communicate who is on-ball, who is helping, where the slide is coming from, and what their next responsibility is.
  • Approach With Purpose: Don’t sacrifice approach technique for speed. Arrive under control and approach from the proper angle to influence the ball carrier toward your defensive help.
  • Slide & Recover: Fire out decisively when it’s your turn to slide, then recover quickly as the ball moves while maintaining awareness of the most dangerous offensive player.
