Sideline Ground Balls is a situational ground-ball drill for all levels that teaches players how to make smart decisions near the boundary and increase their chances of earning possession.
SET UP
Place a ball close to the sideline with two players competing for possession. If the opponent arrives first, the trailing player stays off their back to avoid a push and instead looks to check the stick or poke the bottom hand as they scoop, ideally forcing the ball out of bounds. If your player arrives first, they box out and shield the opponent, then scoop while moving parallel to the sideline so a missed pickup keeps the ball in play.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- Don’t Push From Behind: If you arrive second, stay patient and attack the stick or bottom hand as the opponent picks up the ball.
- Box Out First: If you arrive first, get the opponent on your back and use your body to protect the ball and your stick.
- Scoop Parallel: Approach and scoop parallel to the sideline so a missed ground ball stays in bounds rather than rolling directly out.
