Slide & Stickwork is a defensive footwork drill for developing through advanced players that combines lateral movement, defensive positioning, and stick skills while training players to stay low and move quickly.

SET UP

Pair players together in a 5-yard area, with one player holding a stick in a low defensive stance and their partner positioned in front with a ball. The defender slides quickly back and forth within the designated space while maintaining a low defensive position. As they move, the partner tosses the ball to the defender, who catches it with two hands, quickly snaps the pass back, and immediately continues sliding in the opposite direction. Continue alternating catches and passes while maintaining fast footwork throughout the rep.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Low Player Wins: Drop the hips and maintain a low, athletic defensive position throughout the entire rep.
  • Fast Feet: Slide quickly through the 5-yard space without allowing the upper body or stickwork to slow down the footwork.
  • Catch & Snap: Catch with two hands and snap the ball back quickly, developing stick control while the body is actively moving.
