Defensive 1v1 Positin Preview

SET UP

Set up pairs of players in a lane with cones marking where the offense must execute a stop-and-go or rocker dodge. The attacker moves down the lane at a controlled pace while protecting their stick, and the defender shuffles alongside, maintaining balance and looking for checking opportunities. Coaches positioned along the lane hold up numbers that the offensive player must call out, encouraging heads-up play and awareness while under defensive pressure.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Stay Balanced: Defenders must maintain a low, athletic stance and avoid overcommitting when the attacker stops, changes direction, or uses a rocker dodge.

  • Position Before Checks: Focus on staying with the attacker through good footwork. Throw controlled checks only when the offensive player exposes their stick.

  • Protect & Scan: Offensive players must use body positioning to protect their stick while keeping their heads up, recognizing the coach’s signals, and executing their moves with confidence.
