Swarm is a high-energy 6v6 game for intermediate through advanced players that trains an aggressive defensive style built around doubling the ball, shutting off adjacent outlets, and forcing the offense to move the ball under pressure.
SET UP
Set up six defenders inside the crease and six offensive players outside, with each group jogging in opposite directions. The coach calls an offensive player’s number and rolls or throws a ball into space. That player attacks the ball while two defenders immediately swarm and double, with additional defenders shutting off the two adjacent outlets. The remaining two defenders split the three backside offensive players. If the offense escapes the pressure, they quickly move the ball to create and attack the resulting 3v2 advantage.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- Swarm the Ball: React immediately and get two defenders to the ball as quickly as possible to create aggressive pressure.
- Take Away Adjacent: Shut off the two closest outlets and force the offense to make a more difficult pass to escape the pressure.
- Create Two Outlets: Offensively, players away from the ground ball should immediately provide outlets on both sides, helping the ball carrier escape the double and move the ball quickly.
