Live Ground Balls in the Box is a competitive ground-ball game for intermediate through advanced players that develops toughness off the ground and teaches players to immediately turn possession into offense or transition into a clear.

SET UP

Set up two lines outside the box, with offensive players in one line and defensive players in the other, a coach with balls, a goalie in the cage, and one attackman already inside the box. The coach rolls out a ball and the first offensive and defensive players compete 1v1 for the ground ball. If the offensive player wins it, they immediately use the attackman to play a 2v1 to the goal. If the defensive player wins it, they must clear the ball across the restraining line while the offensive player rides. After the rep, those players remain in the box and the next offensive/defensive pair competes for a new ground ball; the existing players stay out of that initial ground-ball battle. An offensive win now creates a 3v2, followed by a final progression to 4v3. Reset after the 4v3 and begin the build-up again.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Compete Off the Ground: Treat every loose ball as a live possession—win the physical battle, secure it, and be ready for immediate pressure.
  • Turn Ground Balls Into Offense: Once the offense gains possession, move the ball quickly and attack the numbers advantage before the defense can recover.
  • Win It & Get Out: When the defense secures the ball, transition immediately into clearing mode and work to get the ball across the restraining line under pressure.
