SET UP
Pair players together using three sticks—one defender holds their normal stick while their partner holds a stick in each hand to provide checking targets. Begin with the target sticks on the same level while the defender works high-to-low, aiming controlled checks at the heads of each stick for 15–20 seconds. Start with the feet set in a good defensive position, then progress to chopping the feet while checking. Next, spread the target sticks apart so the defender must move their feet to get into position rather than reaching or lunging. Progress by staggering one target high and one low, forcing the defender to adjust to different levels. Finish with the partner continuously moving both target sticks, requiring the defender to track each stick, move into position, and deliver a controlled check. Players can mix in C-checks, recoil checks, and other legal checks throughout the progression.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- Feet Before Stick: Move into position to throw the check rather than stopping the feet, reaching, or lunging at the target.
- Aim Your Checks: Focus on finding and attacking the head of the stick instead of swinging without a specific target.
- Controlled & Legal: Hand speed is important, but every check should remain controlled, accurate, and legal as the difficulty increases.
