Slash Cut / C-Cut Shooting is a team shooting drill for intermediate through advanced players that develops off-ball cutting, timing, and finishing by teaching players to read space and arrive ready to shoot.
SET UP
Set up two lines of players on the wings below GLE with additional players positioned above the goal as shooters. Use cones around the middle of the field to establish the cutting area and keep players from cutting too tightly to the crease. The ball starts below the goal and is moved to initiate the action. The shooter works through a slash cut across the middle, showing their stick and receiving the pass for a quick finish. Progress to the C-cut read, where the shooter initially works toward the middle before curling back into available space for the pass and shot. Emphasize reading the passer and available space rather than simply running a predetermined route, with cuts occurring roughly 10 yards from the goal.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
Time the Cut: Don’t arrive too early. Match your movement with the ball so you enter the shooting area as the pass becomes available.
Read the Space: Use the slash cut or C-cut based on where space opens, creating separation instead of running directly into traffic.
Catch Ready to Shoot: Show your stick as a target, get your hands prepared early, and catch the ball in a position that allows for a quick release.
