The 2-Player Screen Game is an off-ball action for intermediate through advanced players that uses legal screens to create separation, open shooting opportunities, and force defenders to make decisions away from the ball.
SET UP
Set up two offensive players in an alley with the ball positioned at X or in the opposite high alley. The two players work together away from the ball, with one player driving their defender inside and setting a legal screen on their teammate’s defender. On an up screen, the screener makes contact while the second offensive player works off the screen and releases down the outside. From there, both players react to the defense—the player using the screen may be open on the outside, or the screener can open back toward the goal and become the option in the high/middle alley. The passer reads the action and delivers the ball to whichever player creates separation and becomes open.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- Make Legal Contact: A screen should create real interference on the off-ball defender—get into position and make contact rather than simply slipping past the defender.
- Create Separation: The player using the screen should work inside-out and release wide down the outside, creating space between themselves and the defender.
- Read Who Gets Open: Don’t predetermine the pass. The defense determines the outcome—the cutter may come free outside, or the screener may open to the goal and become the better option.
