Spin & Fire is a shooting drill for developing and advanced players that progresses from pure shooting power into controlled accuracy by teaching players to turn their body, align their feet, and drive the ball toward the far side of the goal.

SET UP

Set up two lines approximately 5–7 yards off GLE, with one line on each side of the goal and players positioned on a 45-degree angle to the pipe. Players begin with their shoulders facing toward the midfield corner and their stick extended in front of them. On the start, the player spins toward the goal, uses a small crow hop, points their front foot toward the far pipe, and fires the ball toward the outside third of the cage. Begin close to the goal so players can develop the movement and accuracy before gradually increasing the distance. Have players take two shots from their side before switching lines and repeating from the opposite angle.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Turn, Step, Fire: Emphasize a quick spin followed by getting the front foot pointed toward the far pipe before driving through the shot.
  • Power → Accuracy: Maintain the aggressive, powerful shooting motion while beginning to introduce accuracy toward the outside third of the goal.
  • Miss to the Outside: Early on, don’t worry about hitting a specific high or low corner. Encourage players to attack the far side and, if they miss, miss wide rather than back toward the middle of the cage.
