Maroon Ground Balls is a competitive 4v4 game for intermediate through advanced players that connects contested ground balls to unsettled offense, communication, and fast transition.

SET UP

Set up a 4v4 in the offensive end with players divided into lines around the playing area and a goalie in the cage. The coach initiates each rep by dropping or rolling a ground ball into play, and both teams compete live for possession. Players should attack the ball at full speed while teammates communicate “man,” “ball,” “help right,” and “help left.”Once a team gains possession, they immediately play live 4v4 to the goal, with the ground-ball winner encouraged to roll away from pressure, find space, and move the ball off the first scoop. After a goal or defensive possession, incorporate a breakout component by having the goalie initiate the clear so the defending team can push the ball upfield and continue playing in an unsettled situation.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Scoop Through It: Run full speed through the ground ball, bend the knees, and continue moving through the pickup rather than slowing down at the ball.
  • Communicate Around the Ball: Teammates should identify the ball, man, and help on both sides so the player attacking the ground ball knows where pressure and support are coming from.
  • Possession → Space → Transition: After securing the ball, roll away from pressure, get to space, and move it quickly. Whether off the initial ground ball or a goalie breakout, look to play fast and attack before the defense can get settled.
