Pipe to Pipe is a goalie footwork drill for all levels that develops efficient movement across the crease, consistent pipe positioning, and the ability to arrive balanced and ready to make a save.

SET UP

Position a coach on each pipe with the goalie starting set on one side of the cage. On command, the goalie moves across the crease to cover the opposite pipe, focusing on traveling roughly two-thirds of the distance with the first movement and the final third into the pipe rather than trying to cover the entire cage in one step. The goalie stays in their stance, leads with the stick toward the opposite top corner, and allows the body to follow on the shortest path across the crease. Progress the drill by adding a coach or player at X, moving the ball between all three positions. When the ball goes behind, the goalie turns and establishes a position that keeps them one step away from either pipe, then reacts as the ball moves to either side.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Lead With the Stick: Drive the stick toward the opposite top corner and allow it to pull the body across the crease on a direct path.
  • Arrive Balanced: Stay in your stance, pick up the trail foot rather than dragging it, and arrive at the pipe balanced and ready to make a save.
  • Stay One Step Away: When the ball is behind the cage, position yourself so you are one step from either pipe instead of chasing the ball too far outside the goal.
