Dummy Dodge Follow the Leader is a creative skill-development drill for all levels that builds dodging, stick control, shooting, and creativity while giving players ownership of the movement pattern.
SET UP
Scatter dummies or any available obstacles throughout the playing area, allowing players to help decide where they are positioned. Choose one player to be the leader and have them create a sequence of dodges, stick moves, and a final shotas they navigate the obstacles. The rest of the group must follow the exact same pattern and movements as the leader. For example, the sequence could include a left-handed roll dodge, switching to the right hand, a toe drag, and finishing with a mid-right shot. Walk through the pattern first, then perform it at full speed. Have players begin as soon as the player ahead clears the first obstacle to maximize repetitions, and rotate leaders to introduce new patterns and creativity.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- Push the Tempo: Once players understand the pattern, execute each dodge and transition at game speed rather than simply navigating the obstacles.
- Follow the Details: Players should replicate the leader’s hand, dodge, stick movement, and shot, challenging their coordination and ability to learn new movement patterns.
- Finish With Deception: Keep the stick high and avoid dropping it toward the intended shooting location too early, which can telegraph the shot to the goalie.
