Offense Perimeter Passing w/ John Galloway (University of Jacksonville)

This drill high-tempo stickwork and dodging drill for intermediate through advanced players that develops game-speed split dodges, drawing a slide, and moving the ball quickly after creating an advantage.

SET UP

Set up players in lines around the perimeter with balls starting in the designated wing lines. The ball carrier initiates with a game-speed split dodge, selling either the topside or underneath before getting skinny and accelerating out of the move. Players should dodge with their eyes up as if reading and drawing the one-slide, rather than simply going through a predetermined movement. Once the dodger has committed the imaginary slide, they move the ball to the next player, who quickly swings it again to continue the passing sequence. Players follow their pass and rotate through the pattern. Emphasize hard, accurate passes and getting the feet moving out of each catch and pass. Progress the drill by having players catch the ball in the middle of their dodge, forcing them to coordinate their footwork, stickwork, and decision-making at a faster pace.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Sell the Dodge: Attack a defender’s foot, get skinny through the split, and accelerate out of the move as if you are trying to create separation in a live game.
  • Eyes Up & Draw the Slide: Don’t move the ball too early—keep your eyes up and carry long enough to simulate drawing the one-slide before making the pass.
  • Move It With Pace: Get your hands back, throw hard, accurate passes, and use your feet out of every exchange to keep the ball moving quickly.
