2v2 Cylinder Approaches is a defensive footwork and positioning drill that teaches defenders how to transition from an off-ball position into a controlled on-ball approach while maintaining vision, stick presence, and pressure.

SET UP

Set up two offensive players approximately 20 yards apart, with a midline halfway between them, creating two 10-yard sections. Two defenders work inside the area: one starts on-ball while the off-ball defender must recover to the middle with one foot on the midline. As the ball is passed across, the off-ball defender turns and runs with the flight of the pass, approaches the new ball carrier, breaks down under control, and finishes by lifting or scraping the bottom glove. The previous on-ball defender recovers to the midline in an open stance, with their stick in the passing lane and vision on both the ball and their player. Continue passing back and forth, allowing defenders to attempt interceptions as long as they move with the flight of the ball. After approximately one minute, rotate the inside and outside players.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Fly Out, Then Break Down: Close space aggressively as the ball travels, but arrive under control and in a good defensive position before engaging the ball carrier.
  • Stay Open Off-Ball: Recover to the midline in an open stance where you can see both your player and the ball, with your stick up and active in the passing lane.
  • Move With the Pass: If attempting to knock down or intercept a pass, continue moving toward the receiver—never stop your feet to play the ball. If you miss it, your momentum should already be carrying you into your approach.
