This is a great drill to work on slide and recognition for both the offense and defense

Set Up

Put 4 offensive players in and 4 defensive players in. Give every defender a number (1,2,3,4,5,6,7). have the offense work the ball around like a normal ball control motion. Coach will designate of the defenders as the slide. There are 2 ways to activate the slides:

  1. Coach tells the defense before play starts, who the slide is and then they go on whistle.
  2. Coach yells the number out and the player goes (This can be tough if coach isn’t loud enough)

The defense must stay in a support position off ball and as the offensive player moves the ball, need to slide and recover.

The offense must recognize where the slide is coming from, and go support the ball carrier

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Defense slide and recovery – recovery and protecting the crease area
  • Offense communication and ball movement – the faster we move the ball, the better chance beating a rotating defense

Progressions

  • Play 5v5 or 6v6 to open up more space
