A good skill drill to work with defenders on approaches and footwork
Set Up
Put players in pairs, and If you have enough players, set them up as shown in diagram. 1 Player in the crease area, the other on the perimeter. If you have short roster, you can do 1 or 2 locations, and then keep rotating. The balls start with the players inside, they will pass the ball to their partner, and then follow their pass and approach. We want the defenders to take an angle to force the player away from the middle of the field up, and from behind the cage, through X and not upfield. Have the players switch roles, and then rotate around to different areas on the field
Coaching Points & Principles
- Approaches and Angles – we want defenders to approach with the stick out, and breaking down. They need to take the appropriat angle, based on where they are on the field
- Stickwork – when approaching, the defenders stick should be out straight, slightly up in the air, towards the head of the opponent stick.
