A fun shooting drill to do with your faceoff players

Set Up

This can be started as a skeleton face-off (No opponent), light opponent just there to add pressure, or a live 1v1 face-off. Put cones about 8-10 yards away from the goal, and add a coach & defender on high crease outside those cones

The player who wins the face-off, will attack transition, and the defender will either slide to the player or fake/hold the slide.

  • If defender slides – FO passes to coach for an outside shot
  • if defender holds – FO shooting before the cones

Coaching Points & principles

  • Recognition – Read the slide the make the right decision
  • Defense – try to mix up actions, and use fake slides (hedge) to deceive the player attacking
