Playing with and against Pressure

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age and skill levels at the high school & collegiate levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

At the High School and Collegiate levels, systems should live within the principles. Sets and formations provide structure and spacing, while the underlying principles ensure the team stays balanced, connected, and able to play together as one unit.

3 Man Handle - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great drill to work on stick work in early practice shown by Coach Mike Morgan

Set Up

Put players in lines on sidelines, 3-5 players per line. The ball starts with the ball on the ground in front of the first player, follow these progresstions

  1. They will kick the ball to space, then use their stick to goose, or hockey stick the ball again, and then pick up the ground ball and throw to the next teammate in line.
  2. After they make that pass, they stay out and break out to receive a pass over the shoulder, catch and throw back again
  3. They will receive a ground ball to attack and scoop through, and then leave the ball in front of the next player in line to repeate

Coaching Points & Principles

3 Player Handle Preview
  • Ground Balls and Stickwork – Work on using our stick and feet to kick the ball into space and accelerate through the ball
  • Over the shoulder catches, we want out our top and to match the should we are catching from. If you ae a lefty, you will look over your left shoulder as an example
Tampa Clearing Drill & Game - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

This drill will emphasize spacing, ball movement, and transition principles when clearing the ball.

Set Up

Put 3 players of each team in every quarter part of the field. This is a 12v12 + goalies game. Start the ball with the goalie, and they play 4v3 keep away. After the 3rd completed pass, the last player with the ball carries it to the next quarter. They play 4v3 until 3 passes are made. Continue this until the team with the ball, advances to their offensive end, and they play 4v3 to the goal, and try to score. If there is a turnover or interception during the clearing, start a new ball with the opposite team. Coach can award 1 point for a team that successfully clears the ball, and award 1 point extra if they score.

Principles and Coaching Points

Tampa Clearing Preview
  • Open field spacing in transition.
  • Communication, call for the ball
  • Riding, disrupt player with the ball.
  • Clearing!!
Offensive SKill Session: 1-4-1 Passing - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great passing drill of you play zone offense or man up out of a 1-4-1

Set Up

Put your players in lines in a 1-4-1 on the offensive end of the field. Only keep 1-2 players max inside for each line. Start the ball on a wing, and that player will carry up, and the crease player pops out opposite like a mirror. The ball carrier throws the ball to the pop player, who will then move the ball to X and backside wing as quick as possible. Once the ball gets to the opposite win, they will carry low back towards X, and the pop player mirrors high. Player will pass to the pop player, and swing the ball through point and backside wing as quick as possible. Players will go to the line they passed to.

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • North South Passing

East West Pop Passing Preview
  • Spacing – Players should be speed properly, especially on the pops.. those passes should be 8-10 yards and they should be popping into shooting areas
  • Passing – We want to be able to move the ball quick vs a zone or man up, so work on good passes and moving out feet so we can spin the ball quick
Defensive Skill Session: Fire Zone - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A defensive drill that works on sliding

Set Up

Set up a box in the fire zone on the field (High scoring areas). Add a defender and a token offense player on the crease. Put a line of dodgers up top with a. coach. Coach will tell the dodger to either dodge into the fire zone, run around it, or clip the outside. The defender on the crease must hedge and be ready to slide if they enter the fire zone

Coaching Points & Principles

Fire Zone Preview
  • Be in a ready position – Feet pointing to corners of field (45 degree look) and not to sideline
  • Communciation
  • Maintain the ball/you/man triangle
  • Identify the dodger (Fire zones change based on player)
  • Hedging (Show no go, to slow down dodger)
  • Head on a swivel
4v3 Through X Game - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great small area game that works on moving the ball to opposite areas of the field to find quick scoring opportunities

Set Up

Split the field up in half, and put 4 offensive and 3 defensive players on the field. The offense starts with the ball, and must move the ball through X and play on the opposite side of the field. Once there is a dead ball, coach rolls a new ball in and the offense must move the ball back through X to the side they stared pin, and play until a dead ball

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • Play all even
  • Add in more constraints like emphasizes using picks

Screenshot 2025 10 17 At 12.04.31 pm
  • Move the ball quick!
  • Work on finding space off ball
  • Fine the 2v1, always an advantage for offense
  • Defense must communicate and play zone/man down mentality
6v6 Double Team - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great drill to work on beating double teams and controlling the ball vs pressure

Set Up

Put 6v6 players on the field, and you can trigger the drill from any spot. Start with 1 player being double teamed, and coach rolls a ball into that player. They will scoop it and immdiately need to run away from the 2 players chasing them. The offense needs to have front and back side support so teammates on the field must move to get open. Play until the offense can get a shot off, or there is a turnover, and then repeat from another area on the field

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • For younger players, start with smaller numbers like 3v3 or 4v4
Double Team Drill Preview
  • Play vs pressure – we want to be able to run away to space and maintain ball control
  • Off Ball Offense – Moving to space to help teammates being pressured
  • Defense – Work on trying to get the offense to make bad passes – don’t give away bad checks that lead to open lanes.

*If you don’t have the time for pre-practice, you can incorporate those skill session into practice

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “Play A gets 2 points for an assist”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.
