Finishing & Recovery

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

Triangle Passing Progressions - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A passing drill to work on our quick stick passing and the 1 more call!

Set Up

Put your players in groups of 3 and spread out around field. They will get into a triangle shape about 10 yards away. They are just going to pass the ball around the triangle trying to catch it loaded, and pass it quickly with the next teammate calling “1 MORE”. Add in a 2nd ball so they have to react quicker after they make a pass

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • String the triangle to 5 yards so they have to pass quicker
  • Add a 3rd ball

  • Stickwork – getting comfortable catching and passing quickly – try to catch it loaded
  • Communication – Make sure they yell “1 more” so their teammate knows to pass
3v2 to 2v1 - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A fun small area transition game that gets everyone playing offense and defense

Set Up

Bring the goals to the restraining line, and split your players into 2 teams. Start with a 3v2 on 1 side of the field. Once the play ends or a turnover, the last player to touch the ball on offense needs to spring back on defense. The 2 defenders just in, transition back the other way and play 2v1. Once that ends, start a 3v2 the other direction and repeat

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • For youngest players, start with a 4v2 or shorten the field
  • Add in more constraints like a shot clock
  • Play all with weak hands
3v2 2v1new Preview
  • Transition – Play fast
  • Early offense
  • Find the advantages
  • Communication
Offensive Skill Session - 6 Line Crease Finishing - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A team shooting drill that works on the crease finishes. If you player out of a 1-4-1 or a 2-2-2, this is a great shooting drill to use at practice

SET UP

Put 6 lines on the field, 2 on lower goal line, 2 on high wing, and 2 inside the high crease. Only keep 2 players in each line on crease. The ball starts in the top lines, with a pass down to the lower line. The player on crease will cut to the ball for a finish on the crease

Coaching Points and Principles

Progressions

  • Add in diagonal cuts
  • Add in pump fakes and different finish typer
  • Start the balls down low, put players on lower crease, and finish catching upfield and turning back down hill

  • Move your feet when passing, don’t stand still!
  • Time up your cut – wait till you make eye contact with teammate with ball
  • Finish! focus on high-low
Defensive Skill Session - Y Drill - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great drill to work on both on and off ball defense

Set Up

We will have 4 offensive and defensive players in this drill. They will be set up in the shape of a Y with 1 Group a X, another on the crease, and 2 up top. This is a 1v1 drill, so the off ball offensive teammates can only be an outlet, they cannot go set picks. The focus is for the defender to play tough 1v1, with the backside help on the crease. We want the off balls defenders learning to support the crease off ball when a slide is necessary, and continue to slide/recover out of it

Coaching Points & Principles

Y Drill Preview
  • 1v1 Defense, use angles to force players away from the middle of the field.
  • Slide and Support – Crease defender will be the slide help if their teammate gets beat. We need the backside defender to fill in and cover the crease
  • Communication – Everyone should talk and know who is the 1 (slide) and the 2 (Backside help)
Shell Drill w/ Slides - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A variation of the shell drill that works on team defense and offense

Set Up

On one end of the field, put 5 offensive players and 5 defensive players out, with 4 perimeter and 1 crease player. Use cones to create an 5×5 – 8×8 house area in front of the goal. The offense will move the ball on the perimeter, and the defense will work together to approach the ball, and off ball players working to sink in to help the house. Defenders 2 passes awat should be all the way inside the house, with the adjacent teammates with 1 foot in the house. Have the offense move the ball around so the defense has to constantly move on and off ball to maintain position. On coaches whistle, the crease player will slide to a dodger, and the offense has to react. We want the defense to stay tight in the house as we are weak on the backside, and the offense should try to move the ball quickly to get a good shot off.

Coaching Points and Principles

Shell Drill W Slides Preview
  • Defensively Players approaching the ball should break down with their stick out, thinking about the angle of approach, keeping ball carriers away from the middle. Off ball defense get you sticks up in the passing lanes Communicate “Ball” “1 slide”, “2 Slide”

6v6 Scrimmage - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A live 6v6 scrimmage allows players to apply the skills and concepts practiced throughout the session in a game-like environment. Play continuously while encouraging communication, decision-making, and teamwork. Keep coaching interruptions to a minimum, using brief teaching moments between possessions to maintain the flow and maximize repetitions.

Constraint Ideas: Possession clock • Every player touches the ball • Assisted goals only • Bonus points for defensive stops or caused turnovers • Start from specific situations (clear, ground ball, man-up, etc.) • Limit dodges or require a dodge before shooting • Reward good spacing and ball movement • Play uneven numbers (6v5, 5v6).

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.
