Playing Quick with Advantages

Phase 1: Precision & Pace: focuses on refining players’ ability to execute fundamental skills quickly and efficiently under game-like pressure. Rather than introducing new concepts, this phase challenges players to perform with greater speed, precision, and decision-making while developing purposeful dodging, crisp ball movement, sound defensive habits, and transition awareness. The emphasis shifts toward accountability, game tempo, and consistently making quality decisions at spee

Week 1 Practice  / 90 Minute Session

Activities
  1. 3v2 Tempo Keep Away
  2. Tampa Clearing GAME
  3. Offensive SKill Session - 1v1 Shooting w/ Chaser
  4. Defensive Skill Session : Hawk Drill
  5. 3v2 Crossfire Game
  6. 3/4 Field Scramble
3v2 Tempo Keep Away - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great drill to work on stick work, passing, and ball control vs pressure

Set Up

Create a box using cones, about 5-8 yards away (Smaller the box, harder the drill for offense). Put 2 defensive players inside and 3 offensive players on the perimeter. The offense must play keep away from the defense and can’t hold on to the ball for more than 1 second. The defense must always be playing the ball, the game moves fast so its a great drill and workout for conditioning purposes too!

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • Make the box smaller or larger depending on your skill level
  • Play 4v3

3v2 Tempo Keep Away Preview
  • Defense – Always play the ball and backside zone, constantly rotating
  • Offense – Move your feet to get and open passing lanes. Touch passes, cants cradle and run!
Tampa Clearing GAME - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

Do this same drill from earlier in the week, but now keep score and make it a true competition

  • Open field spacing in transition.
  • Communication, call for the ball
  • Riding, disrupt player with the ball.
  • Clearing!!
Offensive SKill Session - 1v1 Shooting w/ Chaser - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

This drill will get players allow players to read their defender while working on attacking the cage from the wing. Set the players up on the side of the field, with 2 lines. The offensive line is about 2 steps ahead of the defensive line. Put another cone about 5-8 yards away on the wing. On the whistle, both players run to the top cone as coach throws a ball into the offensive player. The defensive player can do 1 of 3 things:
1. Approach High Side
2. Approach Low Side
3. Approach Neutral

The Offensive Player must react to the approach and finish with a dodge/shot.

Defensive Skill Session : Hawk Drill - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A defensive drill to work on approaches at X

Set Up

Put cones about 5 yards apart, and a line of defenders about 5 yards away 45 degree angle. They will approach the cone square, backpedal, and then approach the next cone. Once that’s complete, the second progression is a side run, not a backpedal

Coaching Points & Principles

Hawk Drill Preview
  • Approaches – We want to approach the cone square, and on the heels of our feet.. if we are on our toes, leaning forward, we are off balance. If we stay on our heels, we are in a position to start backpedaling
  • Side Run – We need to turn out hips, and NOT our shoulders. Its NOT a shuffle
3v2 Crossfire Game - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

An uptempo small sided game that will get your players to work on quick decisions, fast play, and communication.

Set Up

Split the playing field in half (side by side) and place a goal on each, 2 goals total. After you split your players into two teams, let’s say blue and white for this example. Place 3 offensive blue player and 2 defensive white players on 1 side, and then place 3 offensive white players and 2 defensive blue players on the other side. The players are not allowed to cross their field lines, but then can pass to a teammate over. For example, if the blue goalie makes a save they can either outlet to their defensive teammate on that side, or they can pass to an offensives player on the opposites side. Play as if it’s game-like, and keep score. It’s a fun alternative way to get a scrimmage feel in, working on these situational concepts.

Coaching Points and Principles

Progressions

  • Play 4v3 of 5v4 on each side
  • Add a shot clock for faster play
  • Add in Constraints, example the offensive must trigger possession with a pick

  • Defensive – playin short handed, so play within those principles like you would in a zone. Communicate and try to force the offensive to take poor shots
  • Offense, move the ball quick, move your feet to get to open space for passes, and finish on this quick hitting shots
3/4 Field Scramble - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

SET UP

Put 3 attack and 3 defenders down on one side of the field in front of the cage. At the far restraining box, set up 3 offense lines and 3 defense lines, alternating by color. Each line has a number, to start the drill, coach gives the numbers going in and hands the ball to the offense. The offensive team must push the ball in transition while the defense has to communicate at talk through the situation.

PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

PROGRESSIONS

  • Tell Defense to play different types of D
  • Add in contraints, like goals need to finish off a pass

3/4 Scramble Preview
  • Have coach change up numbers (4v3, 5v4, 6v5)
  • Encourage to try and find solutions for quick scoring options
  • Discuss slow breaks when occurs, and encourage moving the ball through X

Week 1 Practice  / 90 Minute Session

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.

Tampa Clearing GAME

Do this same drill from earlier in the week, but now keep score and make it a true competition

Summary

This drill will emphasize spacing, ball movement, and transition principles when clearing the ball.

Set Up

Put 3 players of each team in every quarter part of the field. This is a 12v12 + goalies game. Start the ball with the goalie, and they play 4v3 keep away. After the 3rd completed pass, the last player with the ball carries it to the next quarter. They play 4v3 until 3 passes are made. Continue this until the team with the ball, advances to their offensive end, and they play 4v3 to the goal, and try to score. If there is a turnover or interception during the clearing, start a new ball with the opposite team. Coach can award 1 point for a team that successfully clears the ball, and award 1 point extra if they score.

Principles and Coaching Points

  • Open field spacing in transition.
  • Communication, call for the ball
  • Riding, disrupt player with the ball.
  • Clearing!!
