Team Offense & Defensive Work

Phase 1: Recognize & Execute – Players will Sharpen their skills within game context and improve execution under moderate pressure. Players should now have a functional skill base. The focus shifts from just “can you do it?” to “can you do it at the right time and make the right decisions?”

Week 3 Practice  / 75 Minute Session

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.

Offensive Skillwork: 22 Pop Passing

22 Pop Passing Preview

A drill to emphases off ball movement and team passing on offense

Set Up

Around the goal and offensive area, Place 4 lines on the high and low wings, and adding a high and low line in the middle. The ball can start with any player, but once the ball is a pass away from X or the Point, the adjacent line must cut to get to the middle cone (blue color) to shorten the pass. This triggers the nearest teammate on the crease to pop out to the perimeter to get open for the next pass, and then continue that around. Do for 2-3 minutes, then change direction. Players will follow and go into the line they passed to.

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Moving off ball and offensive team ball control
  • Passing, good crisp passes, limit drops
  • Communicate

Shell Drill w/ Slides

Summary

A variation of the shell drill that works on team defense and offense

Set Up

On one end of the field, put 5 offensive players and 5 defensive players out, with 4 perimeter and 1 crease player. Use cones to create an 5×5 – 8×8 house area in front of the goal. The offense will move the ball on the perimeter, and the defense will work together to approach the ball, and off ball players working to sink in to help the house. Defenders 2 passes awat should be all the way inside the house, with the adjacent teammates with 1 foot in the house. Have the offense move the ball around so the defense has to constantly move on and off ball to maintain position. On coaches whistle, the crease player will slide to a dodger, and the offense has to react. We want the defense to stay tight in the house as we are weak on the backside, and the offense should try to move the ball quickly to get a good shot off.

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Defensively
    • Players approaching the ball should break down with their stick out, thinking about the angle of approach, keeping ball carriers away from the middle.
    • Off ball defense get you sticks up in the passing lanes
    • Communicate “Ball” “1 slide”, “2 Slide”
