Playing Quick & Advantages

Phase 1: Recognize & Execute – Players will Sharpen their skills within game context and improve execution under moderate pressure. Players should now have a functional skill base. The focus shifts from just “can you do it?” to “can you do it at the right time and make the right decisions?”

Week 3 Practice  / 75 Minute Session

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “one-pass before shooting”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.

Theme Description

Corner Ground Balls w/ Lars Tiffany (University of Virginia)

Set up

Put players in a single file line, about 10 yards away from a sideline. The 1st and 3rd player are on same team, 2nd player is on defense. Drill starts with a ball rolling in towards the sideline. The 1 player must go attack the ball with 2 trailing. They have a few options here, but its important for 3 to communicate as they follow for help

  • Get ground ball, roll to where teammate 3 is telling them and pass
  • Goose the ball to a direction where player 3 can get it
  • Kick or flip ball to teammate

Coaching Points and Principles

  • Player 1 – Run through the ground ball, if you can and escape the pressure.. need to play in tight spaces. Eye/Hand coordination if you plan to goose it
  • Player 2 – No hard checks, just try to disrupt the ground ball by a lift or a poke, or by boxing out
  • Player 3 – Communicate and pop to open space for a quick pass

Defensive Skill Station: 1v1 Stop and Go Defending

Set Up

Give an offensive player the ball, with a defender guarding them. They will run about 50%, and the offensive player will stop, go, change direction, within a 10-15 yard space. The defender must run under control thinking about staying balanced and maintaining proper stick positioning

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Stay balanced and player under control. Defend with your feet, not your stick!
  • Try to keep your stick upfield in the direction where the player is running
  • You want to trail slightly and not overplay or underplay the space

Offensive Skill Station: 1v1 Shooting w/ Chasers

Summary

This drill will get players allow players to read their defender while working on attacking the cage from the wing. Set the players up on the side of the field, with 2 lines. The offensive line is about 2 steps ahead of the defensive line. Put another cone about 5-8 yards away on the wing. On the whistle, both players run to the top cone as coach throws a ball into the offensive player. The defensive player can do 1 of 3 things:
1. Approach High Side
2. Approach Low Side
3. Approach Neutral

The Offensive Player must react to the approach and finish with a dodge/shot.

2v1 Transition Drill

Set Up

Create a small area field, with lines on each wing. The drill starts with a 1v1 from the wing, adding in trailing defender behind. Play until a dead ball, immediately the goalie outlets it to one of the defenders, and they play back to other end in a 2v1 scenario

Coaching Points & Principles

  • Offense – On your 1v1 matchup, make one move and go! too many moves invites the trailer to double team
  • Defense – Play physical, try to slow down the player, force to weak side/hand and get a double team
  • Transition – Play fast! get up field, move the ball, and create good scoring opportunities.

SET UP

Put 3 attack and 3 defenders down on one side of the field in front of the cage. At the far restraining box, set up 3 offense lines and 3 defense lines, alternating by color. Each line has a number, to start the drill, coach gives the numbers going in and hands the ball to the offense. The offensive team must push the ball in transition while the defense has to communicate at talk through the situation.

PRINCIPLES & COACHING POINTS

  • Have coach change up numbers (4v3, 5v4, 6v5)
  • Encourage to try and find solutions for quick scoring options
  • Discuss slow breaks when occurs, and encourage moving the ball through X

PROGRESSIONS

  • Tell Defense to play different types of D
  • Add in contraints, like goals need to finish off a pass
