Small Area Games & Transition

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age and skill levels at the high school & collegiate levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

At the High School and Collegiate levels, systems should live within the principles. Sets and formations provide structure and spacing, while the underlying principles ensure the team stays balanced, connected, and able to play together as one unit.

Pre Practice Offense: Loaded Shooting from Wing - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A shooting drill that emphasizes catching the ball loaded and ready to shoot from the wings

Set Up

Put a line down on goal line extended (GLE) and a line on the high wing. Ball will start in the lower line. We want the shooting line to turn their body in a ready position, so they can catch and shoot quickly out of a loaded position.

Coaching Points and Principles

Progressions

  • Add in some motion like a drift or a pop to the player on the wing

Catching Loaded Wing Preview
  • Get set up with your shoulders and hips angled to the goal and your STICK UP IN THE BOX area ready for a pass
  • Minimize cradle, try to get in and out of your stick quickly without losing control
  • Finish the shot far pipe!
Pre-Practice Defense: T-Drill w/ reads - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

Set Up

Create the shape of a T using 4 cones. The player starts at the bottom center cone in a defensive position. The defender will run and approach the point cone, and as they are approaching, the coach will point to a direction. they will read that, and side run to that cone, shuffle back to the start cone, and then repeat. Coach should do 3 reps at a time so the defense doesn’t know what’s coming

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • Use extra defenders to be token offensive players, so as they defender approaches, they run making it more game-like

T Drill – Level 3 Preview
  • Body Position – Player need to stay balance in a low athletic position the entire time
  • Stick – Keep stick in a read position at all times.. never drop hands
  • Speed – Try to work through as fast as possible without sacrificing the efficiency of your footwork
Full Field Ladder Clearing Drill - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A full field passing drill for teams that use a ladder clear

Set Up

put 2 goalies around the cage, or coaches. There will be a line of defensive players on each side of the goalie, and then we are add a midfield line at each wing of the midfield. 2 Attackmen will be down at the far end, with a 3rd player/attackman with balls in the low corner. The drill starts with the goalie/coach calling “Break”. One defensive line will break to the sideline for an East West pass from goalie 1. The other midfield line will be breaking up to the low restraining box, and goalie 2 will make an upfield pass to them. Both players will make a pass to their adjacent attackmen, and then will cut diagonally to receive a pass from the opposite attackmen. The player with balls, will give a 3rd pass, to one of the attackers for a shot.

Coaching Point and Principles

Progressions

  • Set up as a Stack Clear with midfield lines in the middle of the field

  • Long clearing passes, make sure we are moving out feet!
  • Communicate, let players know you want the ball
  • Play Fast!
4V3 New School Game - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

An uptempo game that emphasizes quick unsettled situations!

Set Up

Bring the goals up to each restraining box creating a small sided game and split your group into two teams. On both ends, place 4 Offensive Players and 3 Defensive Players. IMPORTANT RULE – Players on both teams are NOT ALLOWED to cross midfield. The game will start with a defending team clearing the ball, starting with the goalie. The players on opposite side of field, must get open for a clean outlet/clear since their clearing teammates cannot cross midfield. The game plays as a 4v3 and the offensive must find the advantage opportunity to create offense. The defense must play player down, and stick to their principles as noted below, to protect the goal. Play for 2-3 minutes, and then sub everyone.

Coaching Points and Principles

Progressions

  • Add a 5th offensive and 4the defensive player to create a 5v4 game
  • Make playing space smaller for younger players

4v3 New School Preview
  • Clearing Principles – Work to get open, spread the field out
  • Defensive Principles – Protect the house/crease area, keep sticks in passing lanes, disrupt the offensive play
  • Offensively – Find the advantage whether its a 2v1 down the wing or up top
3v2 to 2v1 - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A fun small area transition game that gets everyone playing offense and defense

Set Up

Bring the goals to the restraining line, and split your players into 2 teams. Start with a 3v2 on 1 side of the field. Once the play ends or a turnover, the last player to touch the ball on offense needs to spring back on defense. The 2 defenders just in, transition back the other way and play 2v1. Once that ends, start a 3v2 the other direction and repeat

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • For youngest players, start with a 4v2 or shorten the field
  • Add in more constraints like a shot clock
  • Play all with weak hands
3v2 2v1new Preview
  • Transition – Play fast
  • Early offense
  • Find the advantages
  • Communication
Bumper Build Up Game - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A game that will offer various scenarios, that challenge recognition skills and hame IQ

Set Up

Split the players up into 2 teams, and play on one end of the field. On both sides of the restraining boxes, add in 3 lines of each colors, alternating, giving each line a number. Coach will be up top with all the balls and will trigger the start of game with names what lines are in,  and a live ground ball. Coaches can use any numbers, 1-4, 7-9, etc.. The team that wins the ground ball, is on offense, but before they can attack the gaol, they must make a pass to a bumper player on the opposite side of the field, they started in. That bumper player is now in play, changing the situation on the field. If the defense turns the ball over, they can pass to a bumper player and now play on offense. This is a quick, live action game, where players are reading and reacting to the situation fluidly.

Coaching Points and Principles

Progressions

  • Shrink the lines (2 on each side)
  • Add in constraints – must make off ball picks after bumper gets ball

  • Win Ground balls
  • Play off ball, move to space offensively
  • Players with the ball, draw a defender and move the ball quick
  • Defense should be getting into their base principles based on scenarios (Man to man vs Zone when player down)
  • Game IQ – make sure to get players to think about reacting quickly and communicating
6v6 Scrimmage - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A live 6v6 scrimmage allows players to apply the skills and concepts practiced throughout the session in a game-like environment. Play continuously while encouraging communication, decision-making, and teamwork. Keep coaching interruptions to a minimum, using brief teaching moments between possessions to maintain the flow and maximize repetitions.

Constraint Ideas: Possession clock • Every player touches the ball • Assisted goals only • Bonus points for defensive stops or caused turnovers • Start from specific situations (clear, ground ball, man-up, etc.) • Limit dodges or require a dodge before shooting • Reward good spacing and ball movement • Play uneven numbers (6v5, 5v6).

*If you don’t have the time for pre-practice, you can incorporate those skill session into practice

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “Play A gets 2 points for an assist”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.
