Against a 1–4–1, our slide-and-recover system is built to protect the middle while handling constant movement, cuts, and picks. We slide from the closest crease defender to the ball, if the dodge comes from above GLE, the high crease player is the primary slide; if it comes from below GLE, the low crease player goes. This keeps help tight and on time without opening up the middle. But the key is the recovery. Once the slide is committed, the defender who got beat must immediately sprint back to the house, protecting the middle first before finding their man. From there, we bump and sort it out—communicating through cutters, passing off matchups, and reestablishing shape as the ball moves. Off-ball defenders stay compact and ready to fill the next open space, especially with the 1–4–1’s ability to create quick crease looks and backside opportunities. The priority is simple: stop the initial dodge, recover through the middle, and stay connected so we never give up easy looks inside.
