Spike Passing is a stickwork drill for intermediate through advanced players that develops quick ball movement across the body, helping offenses move the ball faster than defensive slides can recover.
SET UP
Set up 3–5 lines with players breaking out roughly 10–12 yards to receive the ball. Players catch and immediately “spike” the pass across the front of their body using the same hand, rather than switching hands. Continue the pattern through each line, then reverse direction to work the opposite hand. Progress by adding additional balls or incorporating ground balls.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- Don’t Switch Hands: Catch and throw across your body with the same hand to eliminate unnecessary movement.
- Time the Breakout: Arrive as the ball arrives—avoid getting out too early and waiting or too late and catching at full stride.
- Beat the Recovery: Move the ball immediately after the catch; quicker passes make it harder for the defense to slide, recover, and get matched back up.
