The 4-Shot Goalie Clearing Progression is a goalie drill for intermediate through advanced players that combines saves with quick outlets, crease rollouts, rebound play, and passing on the run to develop more confident clearing skills.
SET UP
Position the goalie in the cage with a coach shooting from out front and a target available for each outlet pass. Each goalie receives four shots that progress through different clearing situations. On the first shot, the goalie makes the save and immediately throws a quick pop pass from their ready position, simulating a fast breakout. On the second and third shots, the goalie makes the save, rolls out of the crease to the opposite side, and delivers the outlet pass; they can set their feet before passing. On the fourth shot, the goalie plays any rebound, scoops the ground ball, and makes the outlet on the run. If there is no rebound, roll out a ground ball so the goalie can still complete the final progression. Begin with roughly 75% shooting speed until goalies become comfortable with the sequence.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
Get It Out Quick: On the pop pass, transition immediately from the save into the outlet to simulate a fast-break opportunity.
Save, Roll & Reset: After controlling the shot, roll out of the crease to create a clean passing lane and deliver an accurate outlet.
Play the Rebound: React quickly to loose balls, secure the ground ball, and transition directly into a pass on the run
