The Dead Stick Faceoff Drill is a technique-focused faceoff progression that teaches faceoff players to secure the clamp, move the ball to space, and use body position to protect possession before advancing to a live rep.
SET UP
Set up two players in a normal faceoff position, beginning with one player using a “dead stick” that does not compete for the clamp. On the whistle, the active player clamps the ball, moves it behind them, turns into a low crab-walk position, and puts their back and body between the opponent and the ball before securing the ground ball. The dead-stick player can then attempt to pick up the loose ball, forcing the faceoff player to maintain proper body position. Switch roles so both players work the technique. Progress the drill by removing the dead stick and making the rep live, with both players reacting to the whistle and competing for possession.
COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES
- Clamp → Turn → Protect: Win the clamp, move the ball behind you, and immediately turn your body to establish position between the opponent and the ball.
- Stay Low & Box Out: Maintain a low crab-walk position and exaggerate putting the opponent on your back, forcing them to go through you to reach the ball.
- Build to Live Reps: Master the body positioning without pressure first, then progress to a live whistle where players must explode out of their stance and compete for possession.
