Youth Man Down Principles - Link to Drill

A great way to incorporate principles of play into your team defense
Our man down defense acts a 4 player rotation, with principles applied. If the offense puts a player on the crease, we always have a man guarding it. If they are open, we stay open and play a 5-out defense. If the offense sends a player to the crease, defender will follow and become the crease player
Principles
|
|
- Protecting the House is our #1 rule and principle. This means everyone Off ball needs to be supporting in and protecting the house
- 1 Player always guards ball, 2 adjacent players showing for support, and backside gets in the house
- If the offense carries and rotates, we stay with our man until we find ourselves back in the set general zone area of play

A great way to incorporate principles of play into your man up offense
Our EMO is a great way for players to still work within a free flowing read and react type offense, rather than set plays. Often times with set plays, when they break down kids won’t know how to regroup, they just try to run the play again. This model is a constant free flow teaching young players how to play these situations, which will carry over into playing against 6v6 Zone Defense
Principles
|
|
- Spacing – Stay preach, put 1 player on the crease, and don’t let 1 defender guard 2 players
- Ball Movment – Quick ball movement automatically forces the defense to rotate. The quick we move the ball and make decisions, scoring opportunities will develop
- Attacking Gaps – If we dodge, we want to attack the open gaps between defenders, that will force them to slide and rotate
- Off Ball Movement – When a ball carrier comes at you, the adjacent player drifts and the next player cuts. This allows for balanced movement and spacing if you need it

A great drill that works on man up and man down play designer by Coach John Gallant
Set Up
create a playing area 7-10 yards up from the goal line, and have the players play a Straight 4v3 making sure 1 offensive player is in the crease (sideways diamond). The game starts with an alternate player or goalie, passing the ball into one of the 3 perimeter players. Play for 5-10 seconds, every group gets 3-5 reps.
Progression 1: Offense plays stationary trying to move the ball quickly to get an open shot on the perimeter or crease
Progression 2: Offense can move wiring the playing area using drifts, pops, or any motion to maintain spacing within playing area
The defense must work hard to cover the ball and nearest off ball threats by sliding and recovering
Coaching Points & principles
|
|
- Defense: Sliding, recovery, and communication. Try not to over extend and get too wide, we want to feel packed in, use landmarks for guidance. Approaches should be going to ball carrier stick side getting in passing lanes
- Offense: Quick ball movement, using deception to get open shots

A great drill that works on man up and man down play designer by Coach John Gallant
Set Up
create a playing area 5-8 yards up and below from the goal line, and have the players play a Straight 4v3 making sure 1 offensive player is in the crease (sideways diamond). The game starts with an alternate player or goalie, passing the ball into the player at X. The player must drive a low corner to draw a slide, and the offense needs to move the ball quickly for a scoring opportunity. The defense must maintain good positioning and cannot go below GLE. When a teammate slides, the others need to guard the 2 next biggest threats.

Man Up & Man Down Build Up - Link to Drill

A good way to work on the quick decisions in extra man / man down scenarios
Set Up
Split the field in half, and put 4 offensive players on each side, and 3 defensive players on each side (1 O and 1 D on crease). You will play one side until the build up ends, and then you can work the other side of the field
- Coach passes a ball to point player, and they play 2v1 against the top defender. Usually 1-2 passes before a shot
- Coach passes a ball to low corner, now the lw defender is activated along with the 1st 3 players, making it a 3v2. Usually get 3-4 passes before a shot
- Coach passes a ball into the wing, and now the crease players are activated making it a 4v3 until the play ends.
Coaching Points and Principles
|
|
- Offense – Attack the gaps, and move the ball quick to find the open shot
- Defense – Approach angles to take ways passing lanes, sticks up, and try to make the offense make one more extra pass to slow them down
