Solve Tight Spaces

Please Note:The practice is designed to bring value across multiple age and skill levels at the high school & collegiate levels. You can use this as a foundation to build and develop your own practice. With that being said, we highly encourage you to adjust the drills based on your team’s age and skill levels. Lacrosse Drive should always be used as a starting point — you can make drills easier or harder by changing the constraints.

At the High School and Collegiate levels, systems should live within the principles. Sets and formations provide structure and spacing, while the underlying principles ensure the team stays balanced, connected, and able to play together as one unit.

4 Line Spoke Passing – Cross Body - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A quick hitting team passing drill that emphasizes short/quicker passes like playing in a 2-player game

Set Up

Put 8-10 players in a group, and set them in 4 lines right next to each other (North, South, East, West). Players will start inside, and pop out 5 yards, catch and move ball. The next player about the receive the pass will start floating out as soon as the teammate is catching the ball.

Coaching Points & Principles

Progressions

  • Catch and Throw with Outside hand
  • Catch Outside hand and exchange to throw with inside hand

  • Catch the ball with the inside hand and move quickly.. body needs to open up when you catch so you can step to teammate and throw
  • Stick Work – player should emphasize on making good soft touch typer passes, and speed up with ages/skill level
Spoke Passing w/ Groundballs & Pressure - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A fun variation and take off this classic passing drills

Set Up

Put your players In groups of 8 or 10, and set up 4 lines all right next to each other, in the shape of a + sign. The first players in each line are on offense, and the second are defenders/trailers. Start with 1 ball in 1 line, with a live ground ball. the first player in line must top attack and get the ball, with the 2nd player defending as the trailer. The defender will shade one side, and the offense must roll to space and adjacent line teammate must pop out to support. Connect a pass to the outside so the trail defenders can intercept the pass, and continue until you get all the way around the circle. Reset and start a ground ball with a new line

Coaching Points & Principles

Spoke Passing W/ Gb And Pressure Preview
  • Groundballs – Accelerate and get your head up
  • Escapes – Feeling the open Space
  • Off Ball Play – Adjacent teammates must recognize if their teammate curls to them and pop out for support
  • Passing – Pass the ball to the outside to prevent defensive knock downs
Full Field Riding and Clearing - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

This full-field, continuous drill gives both sides of the ball live reps within your team’s clearing and riding systems. Start with the goalie and clearing unit working through your Ladder Clear (Or another system if that’s what you prefer), while the riding team applies your core riding principles at full speed. Once the clearing team successfully crosses the midfield line and establishes an offensive possession, the coach blows the whistle to create a dead-ball situation. The ball immediately starts going the opposite direction, with the units transitioning into their new riding and clearing responsibilities. There are no shots or goals unless the coach calls for live offense—the emphasis is on clearing, riding, communication, decision-making, and getting organized in transition.

The drill can easily be adjusted to prepare for specific opponents or reinforce different concepts. Have your clearing group work against different looks such as a 10-man ride, zone ride, or aggressive pressure, or challenge your riding unit against stack clears, traditional ladder clears, or other opponent-specific formations. Coaches can also emphasize transition substitutions, forcing players to recognize when and where to sub without sacrificing field balance. Keeping the drill moving continuously creates realistic conditioning while giving players repeated opportunities to recognize, communicate, and solve full-field situations.

2v2 In the Box - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great small sided drill/game that emphasis crease play for both the offensive and defensive players

Set Up

Create a box in from of the goal, using 4 cones. Add 2 offensive players and 2 defensive players inside the crease. Next, put 3 offensive players on the perimeter as “passers”. Have each rep be 45 seconds to 1 minute, and throw a new ball in every time there is a shot, miss, or turnover. The perimeter players are trying to make a successful pass to a teammate on the crease for a shot. The defense is trying to not allow the crease players to get open, or catch the ball. Perimeter players hold the ball for 2 seconds max, and then pass to another perimeter teammate. Shots inside should be catch and shoot, quick release. Give the offense 1 point for a goal, and defense 1 point if no shot get off. Defense can earn 2 points for knockdowns or interceptions.

Coaching Points and Principles

Progressions

  • Add in other constraint – MUST USE PICKS, as an example if that’s what’s you are working on

  • Offense – Players should be moving, setting picks, everything they can to try and get their hands free.
  • Defense – communicate through picks and movement, keep sticks in passing lanes, and checking down on incoming passes, disrupting the offensive player.
3v3 Plus 1 Strong Side - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A great small area game to work on playing in tight spaces and getting high % scoring opportunites

Set Up

Create a box size of 12 x 12 or 15 x 15 using cones. Put the goal on the far lower side (where the crease would be tangent), like shown in diagram. Depending on your personell, we want to get our right handed players on the field where the goal is the lower left, and our lefty on the opposite. Add a coach or another player to the outside of the gameplay area, as a support player. It’s a free play of 3v3, and we want the players to find solutions to get to the middle of the field. Players should use the outlet player, and work on off ball play as well, like ghost cuts and screens. Older players can use picks, younger players can work on just basic shallow cuts and movement to create space for each other

Coaching Points & Principles

3v3 Plus 1 Strong Preview
  • Offense should be finding solutions to get to the middle of the field. When outside teammate has the ball, move and work together to get open
  • Defense should be communicating and sliding/switching when necessary
  • Use a 15 second shot clock
Man Up & Man Down Build Up - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A good way to work on the quick decisions in extra man / man down scenarios

Set Up

Split the field in half, and put 4 offensive players on each side, and 3 defensive players on each side (1 O and 1 D on crease). You will play one side until the build up ends, and then you can work the other side of the field

  1. Coach passes a ball  to point player, and they play 2v1 against the top defender. Usually 1-2 passes before a shot
  2. Coach passes a ball to low corner, now the lw defender is activated along with the 1st 3 players, making it a 3v2. Usually get 3-4 passes before a shot
  3. Coach passes a ball into the wing, and now the crease players are activated making it a 4v3 until the play ends.

Coaching Points and Principles

Emp Build Up Preview
  • Offense – Attack the gaps, and move the ball quick to find the open shot
  • Defense – Approach angles to take ways passing lanes, sticks up, and try to make the offense make one more extra pass to slow them down
6v6 Scrimmage - Link to Drill Set Up Focus Points

A live 6v6 scrimmage allows players to apply the skills and concepts practiced throughout the session in a game-like environment. Play continuously while encouraging communication, decision-making, and teamwork. Keep coaching interruptions to a minimum, using brief teaching moments between possessions to maintain the flow and maximize repetitions.

Constraint Ideas: Possession clock • Every player touches the ball • Assisted goals only • Bonus points for defensive stops or caused turnovers • Start from specific situations (clear, ground ball, man-up, etc.) • Limit dodges or require a dodge before shooting • Reward good spacing and ball movement • Play uneven numbers (6v5, 5v6).

*If you don’t have the time for pre-practice, you can incorporate those skill session into practice

To make a drill easier, you might Increase the playing area, reduce the number of defenders or rules, add time or space to make decisions

To make a drill harder, you might: Shrink the field or add boundaries, add defenders or touch restrictions (e.g., “Play A gets 2 points for an assist”), or Limit time or space to force faster decisions

Small adjustments to field size, player numbers, and rules can significantly change the challenge level while maintaining the same core learning goal.
