Drop Step Pickoffs is a defensive footwork drill for intermediate through advanced players that combines drop-step movement with hand-eye coordination to develop active passing lanes for man-down and zone defense.

SET UP

Set up defenders in a line with cones arranged in a zigzag pattern. Players work through the cones using proper drop steps, staying in a defensive position as they change direction. Instead of making this strictly a footwork drill, have a coach positioned nearby with tennis balls. As each defender moves through the pattern, the coach fires tennis balls at different angles—behind them, in front of them, or directly through their passing lane. The defender must track the ball while continuing their footwork and attempt to catch it, knock it down, or simply get a piece of it. Vary the location and speed of each throw so players are constantly reacting rather than anticipating where the ball will go.

COACHING POINTS & PRINCIPLES

  • Drop Step With Purpose: Maintain good defensive positioning through every change of direction rather than simply running through the cones.
  • Track the Ball: Keep your eyes engaged while moving and react to passes coming from different speeds, angles, and locations.
  • Own the Passing Lane: Especially in man-down or zone defense, getting a piece of a pass can disrupt an entire possession—sticks in lanes and make every pass difficult.
